The Department of Justice announced the creation of a nearly $1.8B slush fund that Trump plans to use to pay insurrectionists with our tax dollars. And if that was not enough, Trump is claiming that this was in “exchange” for dropping his lawsuit against the IRS, and had his henchmen at the DOJ include language demanding permanent protection from prosecution for Trump and his family.
Beyond the reality that this is yet another brazen attempt at stealing public funds to reward his cronies, this is unconstitutional. Only Congress can decide how our funds are spent, and even the GOP agrees. But instead of blocking the slush fund, Republicans packed up and went home for recess early while they buy more time to avoid doing anything on the slush fund and prepare to jam through billions for ICE and Border Patrol.
Let’s call their bluff and see what, if anything, Republicans are willing to stand for besides their wannabe King. There are several pieces of legislation in Congress that would block this money and create guardrails around federal settlement funds.
Every Member of Congress, regardless of party, should be opposed to this egregious overreach. Urge them to block Trump's slush fund now.
Dear Senator / Representative,
I’m writing to urge you to immediately take action to block the nearly $1.8B DOJ slush fund that Trump has created to pay insurrectionists with our tax dollars.
I expect you to support efforts to:
- Block the establishment of the DOJ slush fund
- Restrict any taxpayer dollars from being steered to January 6 rioters, MAGA sycophants, senior government officials, and members of the President or Vice President’s family.
- Reject the normalization of blatant corruption and theft of taxpayer dollars
Only Congress has the power of the purse in the United States government. I expect you to reassert that power and block the creation of this slush fund. It is a blatant attempt to steal our tax dollars, and completely unconstitutional. Anything less than total opposition is a failure of office.
