Urge Your Senator to Unrig the Courts

It’s up to our Senators to take action to rebuild our functioning democracy.

Our judicial system is not doing great. Despite the fact that over 160 of President Biden’s judicial nominees have been confirmed to the federal bench. SCOTUS has continued its assault on our fundamental rights. It was not enough to overturn abortion rights in 2022– they went on to overturn affirmative action and allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. And that’s on top of several Supreme Court justices engaging in highly questionable and corrupt behavior off the bench. But Senate Republicans have refused to hold these justices accountable and have been actively impeding the ongoing investigations into their ethical scandals.

At the same time, Senate Republicans have been using an archaic Senate rule known as the “blue slip” to veto President Biden’s pro-democracy nominees for federal courts. They’re holding that if they can keep these vacancies open long enough, a Republican can fill them with anti-democratic MAGA judges instead.

Senate Republicans cannot be allowed to rig our courts and let corruption run unchecked.

It’s time that we restore legitimacy and reestablish trust in our judicial institutions. Email your Senator today and demand they:

1. Enforce the subpoenas that the Senate Judiciary Committee has issued for shady, dark money operatives Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo, to investigate their role in SCOTUS corruption.

2. Stop using blue slips to obstruct the nomination of pro-democracy judges to the federal bench.

I’m a constituent from [REPLACE: your state], and I am incredibly worried about the state of our democracy and judicial system.

The Supreme Court has been stacked with a MAGA majority who are beholden to special interests and the Republican Party. Given their repeated attacks on our fundamental rights and continued unethical behavior off the bench, I have lost confidence that the Supreme Court is a fair arbiter of justice that will uphold my constitutional rights. At the same time, Republicans in the Senate have repeatedly used the blue slip rule to block President Biden’s judicial nominees, preventing the Senate from confirming pro-democracy judges to the vacancies on the federal bench. This is unacceptable, and this archaic rule should be eliminated.

I demand the Senator stop playing partisan political games and instead work to uphold democracy and fair courts. They can do that by enforcing the subpoenas that the Senate Judiciary Committee has issued for Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo, and ending the use of blue slips to obstruct the nomination of pro-democracy judges to the federal bench.

These are necessary steps to restore legitimacy to the courts and reestablish trust in the institution. I expect the Senator to take these necessary steps to make our courts more fair. I will pay close attention to this issue and plan to follow up in the new year.
